Many, many years ago, the Bible was used almost exclusively for teaching. Children would learn to read and write, they would learn the truth about the history of nations, the life of Christ and the Christian church.
They would also learn and increase their knowledge of vocabulary. One of my favorite vocabulary words is "propitiation". It's one of those words that we don't use or hear very much in everyday life ... because it is so integrally tied to Jesus Christ and the victory of the cross at Calvary.
Propitiation - An atoning sacrifice.
Atonement - Reparation for a wrong or injury; reparation or expiation for sin; the reconciliation of God and humankind through Jesus Christ.
"And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." (1 John 2:2)
