The common definition of the word lust is to have an overwhelming sexual desire ... but the deeper meaning of lust is to have an intense desire, need or craving ... and there are other words ... like luxury and luxurious, which have been derived from it ... describing opulence ... expensive things which are not a necessity.
The temptation of lust is all around us every day ... the desires of our bodies ... the materials things we see around us or others have ... and everything that we possess or built through our own efforts ... these are the lusts that we battle against ... as our enemy knows our weakness, and will use these earthly desires to separate us from the grace and love of God.
1 John 2: 15-16
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world
Luke 4: 5-7
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, showed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to him, All this power will I give you, and the glory of them, for that is delivered to me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
