We typically think of a "substitution" as something less ... When we don't have an needed ingredient, we might "substitute" for another. In sports, when a starting player is injured or penalized, a substitute is placed in the game for him.
But in the light of eternity, Christ was the "Perfect Substitute". As sinners, we were all condemned to death ... but through God's love, grace and mercy ... He provided that the perfect substitute, who would take our place on the cross and reconcile all to God that believe in Him.
I Peter 3:18
For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Romans 5:8
But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
